Summer Programs (July/August)

DKCBA offers a wide variety of summer programs for dancers ages 8-18. Our Youth Summer Intensive, Advanced Summer Intensive, and 2 afternoon Contemporary Intensives. See below for more detailed information about our programs.

Auditions occur during class times. Please call 949.360.4233 to make an appointment so that we may place your dancer in the appropriate class for their Summer Intensive audition based on their dance experience. There is a fee for the class and you must arrive 15 minutes before class time to fill out the audition and release forms.

Youth Summer Intensive
PREPARATORY 3—ACADEMY 3
July 8-July 26
M-F  9:30am -3:30pm
2 Week Minimum
This program will include a developmentally appropriate curriculum that is focused on improving dancer technique in a focused and concentrated environment.  We will build on the outstanding training fundamentals that are offered during the Fall, Winter and Spring Terms as well as provide our students with a springboard for the next year.

Students can expect a challenging and rigorous curriculum that will build fundamentals—such as strength, stamina, turnout, shaping of the foot, and flexibility as well as increased artistic expression, musicality, confidence and technique.  Additionally, students will learn variations, refine their instrument with pilates and develop their contemporary vocabulary, with classes in lyrical, jazz and turns and technique.  Students already en pointe will further refine their pointe technique in pointe class.

With an unparalleled international guest faculty including current DKCBA and guest instructors, students will thrive under the tutelage of a world-class staff—including—Dmitri and Jennifer Kulev, Liuba Khozereva Paterson, Ana Onipko, Zippora Karz, Kristi Goldstein, Jessica Wolf, Jessie Hartley, Rochone Anderson, Lissa Johnson, and Taryn Chavez.
This program is designed for dancers ages 8-13.   Current DKCBA students need not audition for placement.

Advanced Summer Intensive
ACADEMY 2 & ABOVE*
July 29—August 16
M-F 9:30am – 3:30pm
2 Week Minimum
An outstanding faculty of resident and guest teachers provide caring and careful instruction to further each dancer’s technical and artistic development. Students receive a comprehensive dance education that includes ballet technique, pointe, pas de deux, and variations classes based on the Russian School as well as partnering, character, and contemporary dance forms.  The summer curriculum is augmented by informational seminars on important topics such as injury prevention, wellness and nutrition, dance history, acting, music, make-up, and career preparation. The program culminates in an end of session observation.

Running from 9:30-3:30 Monday-through Friday will feature DKCBA’s popular Advanced Summer Intensive.  This program will include ballet technique, variations, pas de deux, pointe technique, pilates and contemporary.  In  and addition to our Artistic Directors, Jennifer and Dmitri Kulev, students will learn under the guidance of will feature highly sought after master teachers such as Larissa Saveliev, Kee Juan Han, Liuba Khozereva Paterson, Maria Tikhomirova, Viktor Kabaniaev, and Jessie Hartley. and many more.
*Academy 2A students may take Advanced Summer Intensive if they enroll in 2 weeks of the Youth Summer Intensive.

Contemporary Workshop for the Advanced Classical Dancer
ACADEMY 3 & ABOVE
July 8-July 26

2 Week Minimum

This program will keep students’ ballet technique strong during the summer months but will also enhance their contemporary repertoire for artistic growth and development.  In this program, students will take classes in pilates, ballet technique, variations, pas de deux, pas de deuxvariations as well as contemporary technique, partnering and pointe work improvisational technique and choreography.

The strongest movement in the dance community in the past twenty years has been the explosion of contemporary repertoire for the classical dancer.  Companies like Complexions, Cedar Lake, NDT, and Trey McIntyre Project, give dancers more opportunities to dance as a professional and can extend the life of a dancers’ career.   The well-prepared dancer is now not only a strong ballet technician but is also capable of harnessing a strong contemporary movement vocabulary.  Students who have this skill will find themselves well-positioned for both employment and higher education opportunities.
Faculty includes Dmitri Kulev, Liuba Khozereeva Paterson, Kristie Goldstein, Jessica Wolf, Jessie Hartley, Robert Prescott Lee, LJ Naffarete, Zippora Karz, and Taryn Chavez.

Young Dancer Workshop
Prep 3 & Academy 1 & Academy 2
July 29-August 16
M-F 1:30 pm – 6:30 pm
2 Week Minimum
This workshop provides the opportunity for serious young dancers, ages 8-11 and 12 year-olds at the beginning pointe level, to actively flourish in a professional, yet nurturing environment. Under the direction of Jennifer and Dmitri Kulev, the outstanding faculty members of DKCBA will provide unparalleled instruction, while remaining sensitive to the developmental needs of younger dancers. 

The program will focus on building a solid foundation in ballet technique and educating younger dancers about related topics in the world of dance. Students will begin each day with a ballet technique class, and will continue with pre-pointe work, character, and contemporary.   Additional classes in jazz, lyrical and musical theater will be offered to allow children to develop the freedom of artistic expression and enhance musicality.

Private Instruction
Limited private instruction will be available for Advanced students participating in the summer intensives at the discretion of the Artistic Director.  Please inquire at the front desk.
